No dues dollars are
ever used to market MTA
Editor: Elizabeth A. Bejoian
The MTA Advantage is published three times a year as
a supplement to MTA Today by MTA Benefits, Inc.
lmost 10 million people in 2012 –
an increase of 22 percent from the
previous year – were victims of
identity theft. The cost is estimated at a
staggering $48 billion.
Someone’s identity is stolen every three
seconds. Thieves use the most basic methods –
pilfering wallets, handbags and mail – as well
as more sophisticated techniques of computer
hacking and fraudulent phone calls to access
credit card accounts, bank accounts, medical
data and other personal information. In
addition, they penetrate corporate and
government personal information databases,
including Internal Revenue Service records,
where they steal Social Security numbers
and related information to collect other
people’s tax refunds.
Identity theft can be a simple case of
one-time fraudulent credit card use, costing
the victim minimal financial loss and stress,
or it can be a nightmare. In one notorious
case, the thief ran up more than $100,000 in
credit card debt, including the purchase of
handguns and motorcycles, and even secured
a home loan in the victim’s name. The victim
spent four years and more than $15,000 to
restore his credit and reputation. No one is
safe, but protection is available.
