Candidates vie for seats on MTA Board of Directors
T he Annual Meeting of Delegates will feature contests for eight seats on the Board of Directors.
Christine Boseman and Janelle Quarles, both of the Classified
Staff Union at UMass Boston, are vying for the At-Large seat for
Ethnic Minority Membership. Ann O’Halloran and Jacqueline
Gorrie are candidates for the Statewide Retired District seat.
Other District Director contests are: Shannon Wetherell of the
Leominster Education Association and David Kelly of the Fitchburg
Education Association, 7B; Christine Scully and Leonard Zalauskas,
both of the Educational Association of Worcester, 10B; Nancy
Aykanian of the Westwood Teachers Association and Maryann
Ziemba of the Millis Teachers Association, 28D; Janina (Gina) Garro
of the Revere Teachers Association and Eric Forman of the North
Reading Education Association, 25F; Candace Shivers and Colleen
Avedikian, both of the Massachusetts Community College Council,
44H; and Craig Slatin of the Massachusetts Society of Professors-Lowell and Lois Powers of the Classified Staff Union, 47H.
Candidates declared elected
All other candidates for the Board have been elected under
the election waiver in the MTA Bylaws. The provision states that
if there is only one candidate for an open position, the election is
waived and the candidate is declared elected. Terms on the Board
begin July 1 and last for three years.

Twenty-four-year employee at UMass Boston, union steward for 10 years, Ethnic Minority Affairs
Committee chair for three years. I received my B.A. in labor studies in May 2013; a committee
member of EMAC, EOC and WILD for eight years and an ESP member for eight years.
