of Lexington. Was a high school
biology teacher in Lexington for 39
years. She was a former president of
the Lexington Education Association.

Phyllis P. Cotugno, 93, of West
Roxbury. Was employed by the
Massachusetts Teachers Association
as a switchboard operator for many

Taught home economics, biology and

before becoming a guidance counselor
at Amherst-Pelham Regional Middle

Was an English teacher at Marshfield

Karen L. Farrell, 74, of
Westminster. Was a teacher for 35 years
at Leominster High School. Jan. 25.
Judith Gavinski, 77, of Norwood.
Was a teacher for more than 38 years.
R. Lucille Gilbert, 80, of
Webster. Taught business education
for 34 years at Nipmuc Regional High
School and for one year at Mendon
High School. Jan. 21.
Carol A. Hester-Shipkin, 61,
of Easton. Worked for the town of
Norton for 32 years, teaching at the
J.C. Solmonese Elementary School.
Leonard W. Keyes, 101, of
North Adams. Was a drafting teacher
at McCann Vocational School when
it opened in North Adams in 1962.
He taught there until his retirement.
Roland E. LaChance, 84, of
Arlington. Was a teacher for the
Cambridge Public Schools for 37
years. He served eight terms as
president of the Cambridge Education
Association. Feb. 26.
Elizabeth LeClair, 88, of
Thompson, Connecticut. Was a
business teacher for eight years in
the Thompson school system and
17 years in the Southbridge Public
Schools. Feb. 7.
Helen T. Macheras, 96, of
Marblehead. Was a music, language
and business education teacher at
the Memorial Junior High School in
Beverly. Jan. 31.
Ruth B. Marzec, 92, of Ocala,
Florida. Taught for 27 years in Athol-
Royalston and other districts before
retiring in 1979. Jan. 21.
Joyce E. McCarthy, 69, of
West Brookfield. Was a kindergarten
teacher for 33 years for the Chicopee
Public Schools. She retired from
Chicopee’s Bowe Elementary School
in 2003. Jan. 15.
C. Bradley McGrath, 88, of
Northampton. Was a teacher, coach and
administrator at Smith Vocational High
School in Northampton for 37 years
until his retirement in 1991. Jan. 28.
John “Jay” McHale, 77, of
Salem. Was a professor emeritus of
English at Salem State University.
Had served the MTA as a member of
the Board and as chair of the Higher
Education Leadership Council, and
had served the Massachusetts State
College Association as Salem Chapter
president, secretary and Executive
Board member. March 20.
Myron L. Miller, 91, of Ithaca,
New York, formerly of Lexington,
Brookline and Los Angeles. Taught
foreign languages to high school and
junior high school students. Jan. 18.
Kenneth J. Monteiro, 75, of
Dartmouth. Taught in the Dartmouth
Public Schools for 35 years until he
retired in 2001. Jan. 4.
Faith C. Moser-Whipple, 98, of
Wayland. Was a first-grade teacher at
the Center School in Longmeadow for
many years. Jan. 13.
Mary B. Powers, 77, of West
Springfield. Was an elementary school
teacher in Chicopee for 46 years until
she retired in 2007. Dec. 11.
