University Staff Association turned into a celebratory
gathering when the local reached a tentative
agreement with UMass on the morning of the action.
Trainings and workshops offered during
the conference covered topics of interest to new
educators and veterans alike. Multiday programs
focused on leadership development, and single-session workshops centered on everything from
classroom management to communications.
Evening social events hosted by the New Member
Program, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and
Queer Issues Committee, the Ethnic Minority Affairs
Committee and the Field Services Organization
highlighted the work of groups within the MTA and
gave members and staff a chance to mingle.
The annual Political Dessert session mixed sweets
and strategies, offering members a chance to look
ahead to the next legislative session on Beacon Hill.
Filmmaker Kate Way showed her documentary,
“G Is for Gun: The Arming of Teachers in America.”
A discussion that followed delved into issues of
school safety and the resources necessary to provide
every student with a comprehensive education.
Though shorter by a day than previous summer
conferences, this year’s event went a long way in
helping members shape plans for their locals as they
address the challenges ahead.
Summer member organizer and Springfield
educator Theresa Bryant captured the spirit of the
conference when she told members during the
opening session, “If you want to be the change that
we need, you need to take action.”
