Tip Sheet Continued from page 3
Residents of Massachusetts pay some of the highest prices for propane in the United States, according to the U.S. Energy
Information Administration. The average price
per gallon in December was a whopping $3.14.
Why is the price so high here? Because almost all
propane in the United States is stored either in
Texas or Oklahoma, the expense of transportation
— by pipeline, rail or container truck — accounts
for at least part of the increased cost. The cost of
propane in Nebraska, by contrast, is lower by
more than a dollar a gallon.
The biggest reason for high prices in Massachusetts,
however, is the dominance of a handful of
propane suppliers charging very high prices.
Another factor is that most consumers do not
own their own propane tanks; they lease them
from the supplier. So consumers who want to
change suppliers need to subject themselves
to the hassle and potential expense of having
tanks removed and new ones put in. Most
consumers tend to grin and bear the cost, even
if they’re dissatisfied.
The good news is that MTA
members have a solution
available to them: Tankfarm.
The Tankfarm Group partners
with local propane suppliers
to install tanks and make
deliveries, but it is Tankfarm,
not the supplier, that sets the
pricing and terms. The result for
MTA members? Annual savings
that can run into the hundreds of dollars.
Here’s how it works:
