M TA President Barbara Madeloni has been elected to serve as executive vice president of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO.
The election took place at the state AFL-CIO’s
Constitutional Convention, which was held from
Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. During the convention, MTA Vice
President Janet Anderson was elected to serve as an
AFL-CIO vice president.
Madeloni was elected to an at-large executive
vice president position for the Massachusetts chapter,
which includes more than 750 affiliated unions
representing about 400,000 working families in
the public, building and construction trades and
industrial/service sectors.
Acting on one of the resolutions proposed at
the convention, delegates voted unanimously to
oppose any attempt to raise or eliminate the cap on
Commonwealth charter schools.
Steven A. Tolman was elected to a second term
as president of the Massachusetts chapter.
“I am proud to work alongside Barbara
Madeloni in her new role on my leadership team
as executive vice president,” Tolman said. “We are
lucky to have Barbara helping to lead the charge
against the right-wing assault targeting labor and
Board as a vice president, educators will be well
represented in our statewide labor movement.”
Madeloni said of her new role, “I am honored
to be given this opportunity. President Tolman
understands that the assault on our public schools
and educator unions is part of a broader assault that
impacts all working people. He is committed to
coalition-building and rank-and-file activism. With
our sisters and brothers from across the state, we can
reignite the labor movement and use our collective
power to fight for social and economic justice.”
Anderson said she is “looking forward to working
closely with labor leaders from all over Massachusetts
to ensure we continue to do the important work we’ve
always done — advocating for our members, their
families and working people everywhere.”
Acting on one of the resolutions
proposed at the convention, delegates

attempt to raise or eliminate the cap on
Commonwealth charter schools.
